YACHTS who have visited Classic Works

ANALIA
Length overall : 22.25 m - Year of build: 1925 - Designed by: A. Mylne - Built by: Berthon Boat Company (UK)

Classic Works have unstepped both masts and are varnishing them next to the workshops. As well as the varnish we have examined the spar fittings and are making repairs as necessary. All the spreaders and the two booms have also been repaired.

APPASSIONATA

Classic Works has undertaken mechanical, electrical and electronical works, as well as joinery outside and inside the boat. A new paint was done under the waterline and a new windlass was installed.

ARAMIS

Classic Works removed the old corroded chainplates from inside the hull and built all new chainplates to a modified design. The deck, which is a balsa core material, was also repaired locally at each chainplate where water has infiltrated. We also completely restored the original aluminium mast.

ARGENTUM

In 2005, Classic Works were asked to carry out some teak deck and teak capping rail repair work such as: complete new sundeck, repairs to the margin boards on the foredeck, three new sets of steps between decks, removal and replacement of teak capping rail in way of corroded aluminium and sanding of the main and bridge deck.

BALTIC

Baltic is a twin screw tug that worked for many years for Shell. She was purchased by David Goddard with the intention of converting her for pleasure use. Butchdesign worked with David on the plans for the conversion, helped with advice on safety regulations and supported him in his marketing efforts. Baltic remains at La Ciotat awaiting a new owner to fulfill the David Goddard’s dreams of a world cruising vessel.
BLUE DIAMOND

Improvement of the interior accomodation (reinforcement of drawers and TV protection in cherry wood). Classic Works carried out some studies concerning the modifications on the separation walls. A bench was designed for the teak deck in order to hide the life-rafts.

BUSHIDO

Bushido has made a number of visits to Classic Works over the years. We have helped with a diverse range of jobs from installing new masts and spars and reinforcing the mainsail track on the coachroof top through to making repairs to the deck and coachroof and a complete repainting of the hull. CAMBRIA

Classic Works built Cambria's new 48.5m spruce mast. We have lifted her out on the 250 tonne crane here in the shipyard and amongst other works, carried out repairs to the original Fife joinery in certain cabins. In 2007 we sent a team to Saint Tropez to work on the yacht during the regatta to repair minor damage incurred whilst racing. See details

CLEMENCE

This steel canal barge came down to the Mediterranean in the summer of 2007 with a 12m racing yacht inside her hold and returned to Holland afterwards with the same cargo. Unfortunately en route she went aground and damaged her rudder so we blocked her off in the small dry dock and carried out urgent repairs to the bent rudder stock and welded a doubler over a leak in her steel plating.

COLUMBINE

Columbine is a gaff yawl that was found in the 1990's on the East coast of England. Very much in the same class as Avel, Marigold, Zoraida and Partridge, this Victorian plank-on-edge yawl is currently being restored at Classic Works.

COMETA

Cometa came to Classic Works in April 2006 for a pre-season haul-out and maintenance. Originally called Comet she is built from cedar and mahogany above the waterline and cedar and teak below.

DIONE STAR

Dione Star is a regular visitor to Classic Works. Her owner consulted with Butchdesign before making the purchase 7 years ago and since then she has visited on her way to or back from the Caribbean for regular maintenance and modifications. Butchdesign is also their technical helpline when they are away from La Ciotat. See details

EILEEN

Eileen was built to meet the requirements of the E class under the Universal Rule. She came to Classic Works to repair damage following the explosion of a molotov cocktail (petrol bomb) on board. Essential remedial work was carried out to enable the yacht to sail again.

EILIDH

Various steel frames and also an entirely new steel mast step were built whilst Eilidh was in the shed here during the winter of 2006/2007. We removed her engine for access to the frames underneath and also made many repairs to her planking in areas around bolt heads that were suffering from electrolytic damage.See details

ELEONORA

EVA

Eva was on her way to Cannes when her propeller shaft broke just off Hyères. She came to Classic Works to supply a new propeller shaft which allowed her to continue within 48 hours of the accident.

FLEUR DE LAMPAUL

The boat is owned by the Nicolas Hulot Foundation and carries out environmental protection and humanitarian works. (link). When she was at Classic Works, we dismantled and then rebuilt the overhead decking in order that the engine could be removed and subsequently replaced for a full service.
FLEURTJE

Built as Carita and then Argonaftis, this 187’ three-masted steel schooner came to La Ciotat and asked Classic Works to remake several heavy teak gratings for her fore deck and side boarding ladder to exact dimensions.

FLYING EAGLE

Classic Works carried out modifications on a luxurious teak marquetry table, in order to be adaptable to receive more guests. We also made some improvements on the marquetry itself but kept the original spirit.

FOUR DEVILS

The owner wanted to "personalise" his new boat so he contacted us to modify the saloon, chart table and dining area. We did these works between a charter and the delivery to the Caribbean and also ended up fixing floor panels, air conditioning, teak deck....
FREDELA

Fredela is a teak hulled 50' motor sailer once owned by the inventor of Scalectrix. She came to Classic Works on a number of occasions for woodworks plus mechanical and engineering works. We fitted a bowthruster and copper-bottom painted the hull.

GEORGIA

Since Georgia came to the Mediterranean, Butch has been involved again with this award-winning yacht that he originally designed in 2000. She has been dry-docked in the shipyard in association with Composite Works.
HAMILTON II

When Hamilton II encountered a storm on her way to the Monaco Yacht Show, she suffered considerable damage to her foredeck, lifelines and Teak Decking. Classic Works was able to do an emergency repair to enable the yacht to look pristine during the show and then afterwards Hamilton spent another ten days in La Ciotat while the repairs were finalised.
Irène VIII

IRINA

Irina visited Classic Works in 2007 on her way to Les Voiles du Vieux Port for minor repairs to certain deck fittings.

JERICHO

Built of steel, Jericho was shot blasted and completely repainted in our workshops in early 2008. We also designed and built modifications to the rudder.

JUNO

The schooner Juno came to Classic Works after being damaged in a collision on the last day of the Voiles de Saint Tropez regatta in 2006. Her sturdy traditional construction soon enabled her to be repaired and ready again to re-cross the Atlantic.

LA FLANEUSE

La Flaneuse is a French sail training vessel based in Marseille. She takes many people to sea from all walks of life, especially those who might not normally get a chance to see the beautiful coast around Marseille from the sea. Classic Works and the crew of La Flaneuse built a new mast for the boat during November/December 2004.

LAK II

Lak II was one of the first yacht designed by Andre Mauric just before the Second World War. Legend has it that she was hidden under a pile of coal during the war. She was completely restored by Classic Works. See details

LE TRAVAILLEUR

Le Travailleur is a harbour tug that visited Monaco Marine on its way to Africa where it will be servicing the oil industry. On hearing of the success and reliability of Paletuvier’s Lignum Vitae stern bearing, they asked Classic Works to rebuild their own and the wooden staves that had already worked well for 25 years were replaced with new ones.
LUCIA

Under the watchful eye of her Captain, Kenny Coombes, Classic Works replaced the oak deadwood on Lucia and also built 3 new spruce booms, repaired some frames and carried out significant modifications to the interior joinery.

MACALLA

Macalla is a replica of a traditional Irish mackerel boat. She arrived on a truck and Classic Works spruced her up and installed various essentials for Mediterranean cruising such as a toilet and an icebox.

MARIGOLD

Greg Powlesland restored Marigold during the early 1990's in Cornwall, England. In late 2006 she was shipped down to the Mediterranean and after a winter in the workshop at Classic Works she had a very successful first season here on the Classic Yacht Circuit, including winning Les Voiles du Vieux Port at Marseille in her favoured strong winds.

MERRYMAID

Classic Works assisted the team in Toulon when problems were encountered during the first rebuilding. In particular our shipwrights intervened to lay the swept tapered teak deck and they assisted in the drilling of the lead keel.

MOONBEAM IV

Moonbeam over-wintered with Classic Works in 2003, soon after her return from Burma where she was restored. She was the star of the famous French TV show Thalassa when the programme was filmed live in La Ciotat that winter.

MY LITTLE VIOLET

My Little Violet visited Classic Works for warranty straight after her launching at Abeking & Rasmussen. They appreciated the service so much they returned several times for minor works.

NORYEMA IV

Noryema IV came to Classic Works for wintering in 2008. A lot of varsishing work was undertaken as well as a complete paint of the boat above and below water line level.

OISEAU DE FEU

Oiseau de Feu was originally launched as the marconi cutter Firebird and was owned by the then Commodore of the RORC.

PALETUVIER
Length overall : 21 m - Year of build : 1968

Paletuvier is a small tug, earning its living in a variety of activities. When a new Hydrolube stern bearing failed ten days before an important charter, it was too late to find a modern replacement, so Classic Works turned the clock back half a century and built a bearing from Lignum Vitae in the old style. The tug left a few hours before its deadline and the bearing was so successful they are now requesting similar a replacement for their inboard bearing.

PARTRIDGE

The gaff cutter Partridge was designed and built at the same time as her designer was heavily involved with his similar, but considerably larger, designs for the America's Cup, namely Genesta and Galatea. She was restored in the 1980's and 1990's at Shalfleet and Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England and is now based in La Ciotat and cared for all year round by Classic Works. See details

PELAGIA

Once called Dyogene, this gaff yawl is at Classic Works awaiting a new owner who will be able to undertake one of the last restorations available in the world today (of an as yet unrestored hull). All original drawings are available.

RANGER

Ranger is the replica of the original J Class yacht of that name; she has visited Classic Works on a number of occasions and been lifted out on the 1000 tonne gantry crane by Classic Works to have a new rudder installed.

ROWDY

SAPPHIRE

This well known 100’ aluminium sloop visited Classic Works in the spring of 2007 for minor repairs to her rig, deck hardware and wood work. Her captain, J. Murphy, impressed by our standards and performance, returned in the autumn for 3 months work. We carried out a wide variety of works such as teak hatch repairs, boom vang repair, new echo-sounder units, fitted new batteries, re-made new engine exhaust parts, & repaired GRP silencers, injector service, revision of safety equipment, repairs to her RIB tender, antifouling and hull polishing.

SHOO-SHOO

Shoo Shoo has visited Classic Works on a number of occasions for mechanical, deck and interior works.

SOCIETE NAUTIQUE DE MARSEILLE - PAVILLON

This floating yacht club in the old port of Marseille is over 100 years old and a team from Classic Works spent two months during the summer of 2007 working in the dry dock in Marseille where the "Pavillon" (as she is called) was blocked off. We completely refitted the galley/kitchen and made new wooden windows in the main saloon and dining areas.

SOLEA

This private exploration vessel was in Marseille, when Classic Works did a complete teak deck on the upper bridge and did a lots of joinery work on the interiors.

SOLWAY MAID

One of William Fifes last but most attractive designs, this 53’ Bermudan cutter came to Classic Works during the winter of 2006/07 for minor repairs steering, propellers and shaft, sandblasting the underwater areas and repainting.

SPIP

In spring 2007, Classic Works was contacted to carry out a small repair on the deck. In the end we replaced almost the entire teak deck, within a tight schedule, and this enabled the owner to spend his first holiday onboard.

STAR SAPPHIRE

This famous motor sailing ketch was at Classic Works in 2003 and 2004 for a full restoration of her hull, decks and interior. Her aluminium coachroof was removed and restored at the same time.

TALITHA

THE LADY ANNE

The 15m The Lady Anne was lifted out of the water and worked on intermittently over a period of 18 months in 2003 and 2004. Her mast was unstepped and she was stored in a thermoretractable tent that had a spray system installed to conserve humidity in the air.

THISTLE

Thistle is built of pitch pine on oak frames and spent the winter of 2006/2007 in the shed at Classic Works after coming down from England by truck. She went on to come 4th in Class at Les Voiles du Vieux Port 2007.

THUNDERHEAD

Thunderhead was with Classic Works during the autumn of 2004. The work included anti-fouling, painting the topsides and boot-top, servicing winches, repairing a water tank, changing the zinc anodes, servicing seacocks, tightening the rudder stuffing box and filling gas bottles.

TIZIANA

Tiziana came to Classic Works following an unfortunate collision with Juno during the 2006 regatta in St Tropez. At the same time Classic Works was able to complete some warranty work on behalf of Vitters shipyard who had previously completed a major restoration.

TOMAHAWK

Tomahawk first came to Classic Works after Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2006. Since then she has been back for annual refitting and haul out prior to the summer sailing season. She was originally built of mahogany over oak, bronze fastened and diagonally strapped. In 2007 she crossed the Atlantic in 16 days.

UNDINA

Undina was at Classic Works during the winter 2007/2008 for works on the hull and interior including the replacing of her original aluminium water tanks with new ones in GRP. The epoxy coating on the hull was removed and a more traditional finish with white lead putty in a number of seams was done.

VELSHEDA

Classic Works worked closely with the restorers of Velsheda, Southampton Yacht Services, when Velsheda was in La Ciotat in 2007, helping out with logistics and also carrying out minor teak deck repair work.

VESPER

Vesper was the first Swan 77 to be built. She was previously known as Desperado. Amongst other works, Classic Works lifted up the engine and replaced the engine's anti-vibration mounts and bearings when she was here in the winter of 2007/2008.

VITA

Vita is the tender for the J-class Ranger. When Ranger was here for repair and maintenance work, Vita took the opportunity to get Classic Works to do various small modifications.

WANDERING STAR

Classic Works are carrying out mechanical repairs to the boat as well as work on the rigging.

WAYWARD

Wayward is the original name of this gaff yawl that was previously called Samphire and restored in Bristol, England in the 1990's. She was in Classic Works in 2007/2008 for modifications to her mast step and other works.

WINDRUSH

ZERITA

DRAGON - Year of build : 1938 - Built by : McGruer

Zerita’s sail number DK4 reveals that she is one of the oldest dragons still around. She is awaiting a full restoration.

ZINITA

Zinita is a 12 m JI originally built for Arthur Connel. She spent 2007 based at Classic Works, who did all the maintenance necessary to enable the yacht to do a full Mediterranean race program.
