In order to amortise the running costs of a serious engineering office, Classic Works Design also works directly with outside clients independently as Butchdesign sarl. Under this brand they work for many of the leading yachts and management companies on vessels such as the 2,500 ton research vessel “John Lethbridge”, the 121m motor yacht “Octopus” and the 49m sloop “Georgia”.

The principal engineer, Butch Dalrymple-Smith, used to be chief designer of Camper & Nicholson (Yachts) Ltd in Gosport, carrying on the tradition of Endeavour, Creole, Velsheda, Sylvia and many others. As well as working for Classic Works he is currently professor of Yacht Design History at the International Institute of Design in Venice.

The drawing office is adjacent to the Classic Works workshops, so personnel from the design office can economically supervise activities there, ensuring that queries are dealt with promptly and sorting out problems before they cause delay or additional cost. Foremen in charge of work are actively encouraged to visit the drawing office, allowing them to have an input into the way a restoration or its fitout is tackled and taking advantage of all the experience they can bring to bear on any problems.
